Congratulations! You’re looking at the website for the greatest college in Durham, Hild and Bede. If you’ve already applied, well done, and if you’re just considering Hild Bede... well, what are you waiting for?
Hild Bede is the largest college in Durham with just over 1,200 students. But don’t let its size daunt you! There's a fantastic community spirit where people of all backgrounds, persuasions and interests can find their own niche. In reality, our size enables us to put on a spread of clubs and societies to cater for all tastes. From our hugely successful boat club down to smaller clubs like extreme croquet to the University-renowned Film and Drama society, we have the largest and most varied number of collegiate clubs and socs compared to any college. And, if you don't find something you'd like to get involved in yourself, you can set up your own - you'll be given all the support you need. To support our clubs, there are facilities to match. The college is set in one of the largest campuses in Durham, enjoying a position at the edge of the city to take advantage not only of city life (a mere five minute walk away - most things in Durham are at arm's reach!) but also of surroundings more reminiscent of a rural setting. It's the best of both worlds. So, set within the campus are four tennis courts, a squash court (the envy of many a Durham College), our own nightclub venue, a cinema-theatre-dancehall, a library comprising 45,000 volumes, a chapel providing a home to a choir second only to the Cathedral's and accommodation for over 500 hundred of our students. The grounds are relaxed, beautiful and the perfect setting for Summer outdoors events. Barbecues next to the newly installed beer garden are a regular feature on the grounds, but that's not all... The events put on by the 'Student Representative Council' (or SRC) are of the highest standard in Durham. With two major balls each academic year, a continuous programme of smaller events (including our superb and immensely popular new 'Caedmon Comedy Club' evenings, and our regular arranged clubbing nights at both Newcastle and Durham venues) and the crowning glory, 'College Day', you cannot fail to punctuate your studies with a truly fantastic social life. Hild Bede also has an incredible welfare system. The staff and the elected student officers put huge amounts of effort into helping you have as smooth a University career as possible. Although almost every student has some problem or another during their three or four years - be it financial, emotional, family, social or anything at all - we are here to make sure you don't suffer in silence or unnecessarily. We're proud of the service we provide to every single individual and we're sure you'll appreciate it too. Anyway, enough of the hard sell! We'll let you decide what you think when you have a look around the site. If (or rather when) you decide the site is not enough to get a feel of the place, there are several opportunities to come and get a taster. You can either give us a call and arrange a visit of your own, or you can join one of our hugely successful Open Days. These occasions are over-night opportunities to see the place, get to meet some of the people already here and some of those in the same boat as you. We want you to be in the place that seems best for you, even if that means going elsewhere, so we'll try to let you see everything about the college. Let us know if you're interested! |
